For most patients, Botox (botulinum toxin) lasts 3–4 months before the muscle activity gradually returns. However, this varies significantly between individuals — some patients enjoy results for up to 6 months, while first-time patients may metabolise it more quickly. With regular maintenance treatments, many patients find their results last longer over time.
How Botox Works
Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signals that cause specific muscles to contract. When injected into facial muscles responsible for expression lines — forehead, frown, crow's feet — it prevents those muscles from contracting fully, smoothing the overlying skin. The effect is not permanent: over 3–4 months, the nerve endings regenerate and muscle activity gradually returns.
Factors That Affect How Long Botox Lasts
- Metabolism: Individuals with a faster metabolism tend to break down the toxin more quickly. Very active people or those with high muscle mass may find results fade sooner.
- Treatment area: Areas with stronger, more frequently used muscles (like the forehead in expressive faces) may see shorter duration than less active areas.
- Dosage: Higher doses generally last longer, within the limits of natural-looking results. Your injector will calibrate the dose to balance longevity with aesthetics.
- First treatment vs. repeat: Many patients report longer-lasting results after 2–3 rounds, as the muscles become conditioned to reduced activity.
- Sun exposure and skincare: Excessive UV exposure can break down the toxin more quickly. Good SPF and skincare supports result longevity.
When Should You Book a Top-Up?
Most patients book a top-up at 3–4 months, before movement fully returns. Booking slightly before full return helps maintain continuity of results and may reduce the total dose needed over time. We generally recommend against treating more frequently than every 3 months.
